Cooking Instructions

  1. 01

Prepare the board. Place a large rectangular dark wooden serving board on a flat surface. Make sure the board is clean and completely dry.

  2. 02

Create the cheese moon. Place the large round yellow cheese wheel toward the upper center of the board. This will become the large Halloween moon.

  3. 03

Add the bats. Cut several small bat shapes from the black cheese or black olives. Arrange them naturally across the surface of the cheese moon.

  4. 04

Build the haunted house. Using a sharp knife, cut the black charcoal-colored cheese into several pieces to create the main house, towers, and pointed roofs. Arrange the pieces into a dimensional haunted house.

  5. 05

Add the glowing windows. Cut small windows and one door from orange cheddar. Place them onto the black cheese house to create the appearance of warm glowing windows.

  6. 06

The haunted house should look firm, clean, dimensional, and clearly made from savory cheeseu2014not chocolate.

  7. 07

Make the cheese ghosts. Cut the cream-colored cheese into simple ghost silhouettes. Add tiny pieces of black olive for the eyes and open mouths.

  8. 08

Make the meat roses. Take a thin slice of beef salami and fold the lower part slightly. Roll it gently around itself, then add additional slices, overlapping them to create realistic rose petals.

  9. 09

Repeat with the turkey slices to create lighter-colored meat roses.

  10. 10

Arrange the meat roses generously around the upper portion of the board, alternating the deep red beef salami roses with the lighter turkey roses.

  11. 11

Create the spooky bushes. Arrange clusters of glossy black grapes around the haunted house. Tuck fresh rosemary and thyme between the grapes to create the appearance of an overgrown haunted garden.

  12. 12

Make the mini pumpkins. Cut small pumpkin shapes from orange cheddar. Add tiny pieces of black olive for the eyes and mouths, then add a small piece of green bell pepper for each stem.

  13. 13

Build the pretzel fence. Arrange mini pretzel sticks horizontally and vertically across the middle-lower section of the board to create a rustic Halloween fence.

  14. 14

Create the pathway. Starting at the haunted house door, arrange the round seasoned crackers in a gently winding path toward the front edge of the board. Slightly overlap the crackers for a layered appearance.

  15. 15

Surround the cracker pathway with plenty of fresh thyme and rosemary to create a lush, textured ground cover.

  16. 16

Decorate the lower-left section. Add several large beef salami and turkey meat roses. Fill the surrounding spaces with orange cheddar cubes, herb-flecked cheese cubes, and clusters of black grapes.

  17. 17

Create the large salami flower. On the lower-right side, arrange overlapping slices of marbled beef salami in a circular pattern to form a large dramatic flower.

  18. 18

Make the spider. Place a large black olive in the center of the salami flower for the spideru2019s body. Cut thin strips of black olive and arrange them around the body to form curved legs.

  19. 19

Make a second, smaller olive spider and place it among the cheese cubes in the foreground.

  20. 20

Fill any remaining empty spaces with mini pumpkins, grapes, cheese cubes, crackers, olives, rosemary, and thyme.

  21. 21

Step back and check the composition. Keep the moon and haunted house as the main focal point, while the cracker pathway should lead naturally from the house toward the front of the board.

  22. 22

Serve immediately, or cover the finished board and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Chef notes

- Use firm black cheese colored with food-grade vegetable charcoal so the haunted house keeps its shape. - Cut the cheese house pieces thick enough to prevent the towers from breaking. - Prepare the ghosts, bats, pumpkins, and spiders before assembling the board to make the final arrangement easier. - For beautiful meat roses, use very thin slices and overlap each slice slightly as you roll. - Use beef salami and turkey deli meat to keep the board pork-free. - Choose firm cheeses that can be cut cleanly into cubes and Halloween shapes. - Keep the cracker pathway clearly visible so it leads the eye directly to the haunted house. - Add rosemary and thyme between the grapes and crackers for a natural, spooky garden effect. - Assemble the board from the back to the front, placing the tallest decorations first. - Fill small gaps with grapes, cheese cubes, herbs, or crackers so the board looks abundant and luxurious. - For the best presentation, serve the board on a dark wooden platter that contrasts beautifully with the orange, cream, red, green, and black elements. - Assemble shortly before serving and keep refrigerated until ready to enjoy.
