Ingredients

  • 1 large black bat-shaped serving platter
  • 8–10 oz thinly sliced salami
  • 8 oz cheddar cheese
  • 2–3 oz white cheese, such as mozzarella or mild white cheddar
  • 2 large carrots
  • 1 head curly green leaf lettuce
  • A few burgundy lettuce leaves
  • 15–20 black olives
  • 8–10 cherry tomatoes
  • 1 small cucumber
  • Small pieces of black olive or black cheese for decoration

Cooking Instructions

  1. 01

Prepare the vegetables and lettuce: Wash and thoroughly dry the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, and olives. Slice the cucumber into rounds and cut the carrots into thin sticks.

  2. 02

Prepare the cheese decorations: Cut the cheddar into elongated rectangles for the fan-shaped sections. Cut the white cheese into small ghost shapes. Make two small circular holes for the eyes and one larger vertical oval hole for the mouth using a small straw or piping tip.

  3. 03

Add the cheese and carrots: Arrange the cheddar slices behind the salami wings in overlapping fans. Place the carrot sticks underneath and around them in symmetrical radiating bundles.

  4. 04

Build the center: Arrange black olives vertically down the center to create the body. Use a larger olive for the head and thin black olive strips for the curved antennae.

  5. 05

Create the salami wings: Roll the salami slices tightly into small rolls, keeping the circular ends visible. Arrange them in dense, symmetrical fan-shaped rows on both sides of the platter.

  6. 06

Decorate the tomatoes and cucumbers: Add tiny black olive pieces to the cherry tomatoes to create Halloween faces. Place a black olive in the center of each cucumber slice and surround it with thin black strips to create spider legs.

  7. 07

Add the Halloween details: Place the white cheese ghosts on both sides of the platter and add small black bat-shaped cheese decorations over the cheddar sections. Finish the edges with green and burgundy lettuce.

  8. 08

Finish and serve: Adjust the ingredients so both sides are as symmetrical as possible. Refrigerate until ready to serve, then bring the platter to the table as a festive Halloween appetizer.

Chef notes

- Chill the cheeses for 10–15 minutes before cutting to make clean, sharp shapes. - Use a small straw or piping tip to create the ghost eyes and mouths neatly. - Pat the vegetables and lettuce completely dry before assembling the platter. - Roll the salami tightly so the wings look full, structured, and symmetrical. - Use black olive pieces for the Halloween faces instead of food coloring. - Arrange the ingredients from the center outward to maintain the bat-shaped composition. - Keep both sides as symmetrical as possible for a polished presentation. - Refrigerate the assembled platter until ready to serve.
